Chris Sangwin finalist for Innovate UK Academic of the Year 2025

The Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership Awards celebrate the success of collaborations between businesses and academic institutions.

Professor Chris Sangwin has been nominated for his Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with the technology social enterprise IDEMS.

Chris is the Professor of Mathematics Education within the Centre for Technology Enhanced Mathematical Sciences Education.

The two-year KTP for Digital Mathematics Assessment, due to finish at the end of August, has enhanced STACK the world's leading open-source assessment system for mathematics and STEM.

STACK is designed to allow students to answer questions with a mathematical expression, such as a polynomial.

The KTP, funded by Innovate UK, focussed on improving STACK in two ways:

  1. Developing features to improve the assessment of proof-based questions in STACK.
  2. Optimising STACK so that it can be used in broader contexts, for example statistics and data science.

Chris is shortlisted alongside Dr David Hughes from the University of Manchester and Dr Firdous Nazir from Glasgow Caledonian University.

The 2025 awards mark the 50th anniversary of the KTP program, and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Manchester in October.
