Miguel de Carvalho, Chair of Statistical Data Science, is developing models for the complex sequential nature of extreme events, as well as generative AI models for extreme events. Miguel is an applied mathematical statistician with broad research interests. He is an expert in extreme value theory, the interfaces between statistics and AI, and Bayesian analysis. In collaboration with industry, Miguel’s work bridges statistical models with large language models to interface quantitative and language-based aspects. He also has extensive experience in forecasting, time series analysis, spatial statistics, and the application of statistical methods to problems in medical, environmental, and financial sciences. Current AI projectsMiguel organised the first annual workshop on Generative AI Modelling for Extreme Events (GAME) from June 13-14 2025. GAME 2026 is scheduled to take place in Bologna, Italy.Generative AI Modelling for Extreme Events 2025 | Generative AI Laboratory Awards and fellowshipsMiguel is a fellow of Edinburgh's Generative AI Laboratory (GAIL):Four SoM researchers appointed Fellows of Edinburgh’s Generative AI Lab | SoM BlogMiguel is funded by Aberdeen Investments, GAIL, Prob_AI, Leverhulme Trust and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
