Miguel de Carvalho

Miguel de Carvalho, Chair of Statistical Data Science, is developing models for the complex sequential nature of extreme events, as well as generative AI models for extreme events.

Miguel is an applied mathematical statistician with broad research interests. He is an expert in extreme value theory, the interfaces between statistics and AI, and Bayesian analysis.

In collaboration with industry, Miguel’s work bridges statistical models with large language models to interface quantitative and language-based aspects.

He also has extensive experience in forecasting, time series analysis, spatial statistics, and the application of statistical methods to problems in medical, environmental, and financial sciences.
