TEMSE seminar series

Co-organised with TEMSE at Heriot-Watt University, we host a regular seminar on a range of topics in mathematical sciences educational research, as well as more practical learning and teaching topics. The format of the seminar includes a main invited speaker, followed by an informal discussion of a paper to be read in advance. Seminars are scheduled every two weeks, and run in a hybrid format.

The School of Mathematics Teaching Café is a regular series of informal meetings for discussion about teaching-related issues.

Historiography of Mathematical Symbolism

In the context of the British Academy Global Professorship held by Karine Chemla at the University of Edinburgh (2024-2028), this seminar series and conference will focus on the history of the historiography of mathematical symbolism. The point is not to determine who was actually the first to introduce such notations into mathematics, but rather to analyse what gave rise to these various claims and what historical and philosophical presuppositions about mathematical symbolism underpinned them.
