Mathematical Physics

The Mathematical Physics group's research interests include theoretical and mathematical aspects of quantum field theory, gauge theory, gravitational theory, string theory and holography.

Our group's expertise covers a broad range of areas including classical and quantum field theory, gauge theory, general relativity, supergravity, black holes, holography, quantum gravity, string theory, supersymmetry, conformal field theory, amplitudes, non-Lorentzian geometry and physics, integrable systems, solitons, twistor theory.

We are part of a wider community of theoretical and mathematical physicists in Edinburgh that form the Edinburgh Mathematical Physics Group (with the mathematical physics group at Heriot-Watt university) and the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics (with the School of Physics and Astronomy).
