Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowship

Personal, career development focused awards that can be up to three years long.  Applications can be submitted at any time.

STFC

Ernest Rutherford Fellowship

The Ernest Rutherford Fellowships will enable early career researchers with clear leadership potential to establish a strong, independent research programme. They will encourage talented researchers in UK universities to remain in the country and at the same time attract outstanding overseas researchers to the UK. This scheme is under demand management, and we can usually only submit one application.  Deadline is usually late September/early October.

Future Leaders Fellowship

Future Leaders Fellowship support talented people and help them develop into world-class research and innovation leaders.  This scheme is under demand management and the review process usually begins in early spring with applications submitted in early summer.

European Research Council

Starting Grants

ERC Starting Grants aim to support up-and-coming research leaders who are about to establish a proper research team and to start conducting independent research in Europe. The scheme targets promising researchers who have the proven potential of becoming independent research leaders. It will support the creation of excellent new research teams. 

This scheme is for researchers of any nationality with two to seven years of experience since completion of their PhD and who have a scientific track record showing great promise. Funding of up to €1.5million for five years. Calls for proposals are published once a year with the deadline usually in October.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Postdoctoral Fellowships action targets researchers holding a PhD who wish to carry out their research activities abroad, acquire new skills and develop their careers. 

There are two types of fellowship:

European Postdoctoral Fellowships. They are open to researchers moving within Europe or coming to Europe from another part of the world to pursue their research career. These fellowships take place in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country and can last between 1 and 2 years. Researchers of any nationality can apply.

Global Postdoctoral Fellowships. They fund the mobility of researchers outside Europe. The fellowship lasts between 2 to 3 years, of which the first 1 to 2 years will be spent in a non-associated Third Country, followed by a mandatory return phase of 1 year to an organisation based in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country. Only nationals or long-term residents of the EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries can apply.

Royal Society

University Research Fellowship

This scheme is for outstanding scientists in the UK who are in the early stages of their research career and have the potential to become leaders in their field. These long-term fellowships provide the opportunity and freedom to build an independent research career and pursue cutting-edge scientific research. There is one call a year with the deadline usually in early September.

Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship

This scheme offers a recognised first step into an independent research career for outstanding early career scientists who require a flexible working pattern due to personal circumstances such as caring responsibilities and/or health-related conditions.  There is one call a year with the deadline usually in late October.

Newton International Fellowship

This scheme is for non-UK scientists who are at an early stage of their research career and wish to conduct research in the UK. Applicants must not hold UK citizenship.  There is one call a year with the deadline usually in March.

Research Fellowships

Giving early career scientists or engineers of exceptional promise the opportunity to conduct research of their own instigation.  The ultimate objective is to contribute to the knowledge base required for a healthy and innovative national culture. Around eight awards are made each year.  There is one call per year with the deadline usually in early January.
