Last week, the School hosted an academic-industry event, 'Modelling the Unprecedented: Insurance Resilience in an Era of Extreme Climate Events,' at EFI. The 4th March event, hosted by Miguel de Carvalho (Chair of Statistical Data Science), brought together climate scientists, statisticians, and insurance industry professionals to address the growing 'insurability gap' caused by the surge in global extreme weather. The keynote speaker, Christos Mitas from Moody's Analytics, spoke of his work leading the Climate Hazards Model Development team of Moody's RMS. We also heard from Pete Rutherford (Aon), and Manoranjan Muthusamy (Flood Re) who shared their takes on the challenges facing risk assessment and capital management across the insurance industry. From our School, Amy Wilson (Lecturer in Industrial Mathematics) shared insights on 'modelling and propagating uncertainty in flood inundation models', and Jordan Richards (Lecturer in Statistics) presented 'statistical deep learning for modelling environmental extremes'.A huge thank you to all our speakers, including Luca Taschini and Raffaella Cabrese from University of Edinburgh Business School, and Gabi Hegerl and Simon Tett from the School of GeoSciences. The afternoon culminated in a vibrant panel session focusing on how academia and industry can collaborate together moving forward and was followed by an evening reception for networking.
