New Statistics with Artificial Intelligence MSc provides statistics-first route into AI

A new MSc programme which emphasises the statistical foundations of machine learning will prepare graduates for the evolving demands of industry.

The School of Mathematics is launching a new Statistics with Artificial Intelligence MSc, equipping graduates with the statistical foundations and practical skills needed for the next generation of AI and data science professionals.

The MSc emphasises statistical foundations, machine learning, and deep learning while teaching students to critically evaluate AI outputs, focusing on uncertainty, assumptions, and limitations. Alongside theoretical training, the programme offers hands-on experience in Python and R programming languages.

Three students gathered round laptops. They appear to be discussing their work.

Consultancy-style projects will give students the opportunity to apply their skills in real-world scenarios, developing the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to address challenges beyond the classroom.

The new MSc responds to industry demand for professionals who can do more than just use AI tools. Understanding how these technologies work, evaluating their outputs, and recognising their limitations is essential to applying them effectively and responsibly.

The programme has already attracted interest from industry partners, who highlight the importance of combining statistical understanding with practical AI expertise.

Aryan Verma, Senior Consultant Data Science at Simon-Kucher, says, "I think this programme is particularly timely because it brings together strong statistical reasoning with modern AI methods. Across industries such as finance, healthcare, technology, consulting and the public sector, organisations increasingly need people who can work with complex data, understand uncertainty, assess AI outputs critically, and apply AI tools responsibly".

"It is a thoughtful programme that should prepare graduates well for the way data and AI are increasingly being used across industry".

Neil McEwan, Founder and CEO of Aquallite Data Ltd, emphasised the importance of understanding the underlying principles of AI. He says, "The quality of the students emerging from the School of Mathematics is exceptional. We've done multiple MSc and funded projects with them over the last 3 years, and each broke new ground".

"What we're learning is critical to AI is not being able to use it, but instead to understand how best to use it. This only comes from a fundamental understanding of how it actually works – and statistics sits at the heart of this. By combining AI and statistics, this course offers an invaluable opportunity to make more intelligent decisions about how to most effectively apply AI".
