Four SoM professors elected Fellows of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences

Professors Miguel Anjos, Chris Dent, Minhyong Kim and Ruth King are amongst the inaugural cohort of Fellows for the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences.

The Academy for the Mathematical Sciences honours mathematicians who have made sustained and influential contributions to the advancement of the mathematical sciences, both nationally and internationally.

The Fellowship recognises excellence in research, education, knowledge exchange, and service to the discipline across the full breadth of the mathematical sciences community.

Election to the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences Fellowship comes with a commitment to contribute to the work of the Academy, catalysing a much greater impact of mathematical expertise on policy and civil society.

Professor Miguel Anjos, Chair of Operational Research, carries out research in mathematical optimisation and its industrial applications.

Professor Anjos says, "I am humbled to be a Founding Fellow of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences. This is an exciting time for the Mathematical Sciences with the growing importance of mathematics in our daily lives. I look forward to supporting the Academy's activities in promoting awareness of the importance of the mathematical sciences in business, industry and government."

Professor Anjos serves as Chair of the Research Committee of the OR Society, Past-Chair of the Mathematical Optimisation Society, and member of the Managing Boards of the EURO Working Groups on Continuous Optimisation and on Stochastic Optimisation. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, EUROPT and the Canadian Academy of Engineering.

His accolades include an Inria International Chair, a Canada Research Chair, the NSERC-Hydro-Quebec-Schneider Electric Industrial Research Chair, a Humboldt Research Fellowship, INFORMS and IEEE Senior Memberships, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Professor Chris Dent is the School's Professor of Industrial Mathematics. He is recognised for his contributions in the application of mathematical science methods to energy and infrastructure engineering and policy.

He says, "I am very proud to be part of the first cohort of Fellows of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences alongside my Edinburgh University and Maxwell Institute colleagues.

The Fellowship illustrates the importance of the Mathematical Sciences across society, and I look forward to new opportunities to support the wider community in my specialist areas of energy, engineering and public policy."

Professor Dent is also a Fellow of the OR Society, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and the Institution of Engineers in Scotland. He is also one of few mathematical science academics to be qualified as Chartered Engineer.

He has received the Edinburgh Mathematical Society's Impact Prize and, earlier in his career, the IET Young Engineer Career Achievement Award.

Professor Minhyong Kim, Director of the International Centre for Mathematics Sciences, is the Sir Edmond Whittaker Professor of Mathematical Sciences, jointly appointed with Heriot-Watt University. He is recognised for his research in number theory and mathematical physics with emphasis on topological quantum field theory.

Minhyong has a keen interest in public engagement. He has given numerous presentations since 2010 at schools, teacher training workshops, international music festivals, and corporate training programmes, as well as 'talk concerts' on a wide range of topics in mathematics and its interface with other domains of inquiry, especially physics and economics. He has published 15 books so far written for the general public, many of them bestsellers.

Professor Ruth King, Thomas Bayes Chair of Statistics, is a world-leader in statistical ecology and multiple systems estimation. She focuses on developing new statistical techniques to address challenges arising from real-world data to provide meaningful insight into the application under study, working closely with domain experts to ensure relevant statistical innovation and impact.

Ruth says, "I am both excited and honoured to be elected as an inaugural Fellow to the Academy. The Mathematical Sciences plays an increasingly important role across all areas of society, providing the rigorous foundation that supports data-driven innovation leading to economic growth and positive societal impact."

Ruth is an elected Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. In 2022, she was awarded the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) Barnett Award for her work in statistical ecology, and in particular, bringing to prominence in the field the use of Bayesian statistics.

She is an active member of the statistical community, with roles undertaken including elected President of the British and Irish Region of the International Biometrics Society (2019-20); elected RSS Council member (2018-21); and RSS International Conference Chair (2025).

In total, there are six Fellows from across the University:
