The University of Cambridge has announced the winner of one of its oldest and most prestigious prizes. The Adams Prize is awarded jointly each year by the Faculty of Mathematics and St John's College to UK-based researchers, under the age of 40, doing first class international research in the Mathematical Sciences. This year's topic was "Mathematics of Statistical Mechanics" and the prize has been jointly awarded to Theo Assiotis of the University of Edinburgh and Giuseppe Cannizzaro of the University of Warwick.Dr Theo Assiotis is recognised for his deep contributions at the interface of random matrix theory and interacting particle systems. Using structures from algebraic combinatorics and integrable systems, he has proved several results on the asymptotic behaviour of characteristic polynomials for random matrices, as well as their dynamical counterparts when the matrices evolve akin to Dyson's Brownian motion.The Adams Prize is named after the mathematician John Couch Adams and was endowed by members of St John's College. It commemorates Adams's role in the discovery of the planet Neptune, through calculation of the discrepancies in the orbit of Uranus.
