What We Can Offer You Experience & Training From 2018 we are offering a unique PhD experience under the umbrella of the Maxwell Graduate School. PhD students from The University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt will share common space in their first year in The Bayes Centre. High-quality academic training in the form of courses and seminar series will be offered jointly. All our PhD students will also receive training in transferable skills in one of four streams, based on your preference – teaching, outreach, industry Scottish Mathematical Sciences Training Centre (SMSTC) A range of graduate courses, organised through the SMSTC, are attended by PhD students during the first 6 months of the programme. Other options for training are available including NATCOR and APTS courses. Academic Development The University's Institute for Academic Development offers support for teaching, learning and researcher development. They provide support directly to students with a range of events, courses and resources. Tutoring PhD students in the School of Mathematics are expected to undertake tutoring of our undergraduate students. Payment for tutoring is by Guaranteed Hours Contract (of employment). We believe that tutoring is an important part of the PhD experience and that it helps PhD students to develop their skills and enhance their experience.
