School secures £2.4 million from XTX Markets to boost pure mathematics research

The School of Mathematics has received a major philanthropic gift of £2.4 million from XTX Markets, a leading London-based algorithmic trading firm, creating new opportunities for postgraduate and early-career researchers.

This funding will strengthen our capacity for world-leading research in pure mathematics by supporting the recruitment of outstanding PhD students and postdoctoral researchers over the next three years.

The gift places Edinburgh alongside six other top UK institutions, the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Liverpool, Warwick and Imperial College London, to receive a share of £26 million donated by the trading firm, funding over 100 PhD and postdoctoral research positions in total.

Professor Bernd Schroers, Head of School, says, "This is great news for the School, for its world-leading research groups in pure mathematics and for early career researchers in pure mathematics around the world.

The additional PhD students and post docs, made possible by XTX funding, will join a fantastic research and training environment in pure mathematics, further enhanced by opportunities in the Centre for Doctoral Training in Algebra, Geometry and Quantum Fields and the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Edinburgh."
