Project takes 'Energy Flexibility Newcomer' at Flex Awards 2025

The 'Flexibility Markets Unlocked' project, led by Dr Lars Schewe and engineering consultancy Arup, has been honoured with the 'Energy Flexibility Newcomer' award at the 2025 Utility Week Flex Awards.

The Flex Awards, hosted by Utility Week, celebrate groundbreaking projects that are shaping the future of energy flexibility. The 'Energy Flexibility Newcomer' category specifically highlights new initiatives demonstrating exceptional promise and impact in the evolving energy landscape.

The Flexibility Markets Unlocked project team, which also included Professor Chris Dent and Dr Zeynep Şuvak from the School, developed three digital solutions designed to unlock and scale flexibility across the UK energy system.

This academic-industry project is a collaboration between the University, Arup, and Innovate UK's Energy Systems Catapult, alongside the energy-tech companies Electron, GreenSync and Piclo.

The project is Phase 2 of the Flex Markets Unlocked Innovation Programme for the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, which is part of the government’s £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio.

The winners were announced at Utility Week Live, hosted from 20-21 May at the NEC in Birmingham.
