Karine Chemla awarded 2027 Albert Leon Whiteman Memorial Prize

Professor Chemla is recognised for her field-defining efforts in leading collaborative projects which have expanded understanding of the global history of ancient mathematics.

Professor Karine Chemla will receive the American Mathematical Society's 2027 Albert Leon Whiteman Memorial Prize for her outstanding contributions to the history of mathematics in Ancient China and 19th century Europe, and her theoretical contributions to the study of scientific texts and cultures.

The Whiteman Prize, awarded every three years, was established in 1998 by Sally Whiteman in memory of her husband, Albert Leon Whiteman. The Prize recognises notable exposition and exceptional scholarship in the history of mathematics.

Karine says, "While I am deeply moved to be awarded the Albert Leon Whiteman Memorial Prize, I know this recognition belongs not only to me, but also to all those with whom I had the privilege of working and who have selflessly contributed to collective endeavours. It is a great pleasure to express my gratitude to them, as well as to all those who have encouraged and supported me in every possible way".

"This recognition also goes to the ideals that have inspired my research. Indeed, my work has always been rooted in the conviction that thinking about mathematics requires considering sources coming from all over the world and across all historical periods. My publications on mathematical proof, on the epistemological values prized by collectives of mathematicians, and, most recently, on mathematical symbolism all reflect this engagement".

"Last, but not least, it means a lot to me that a mathematical society like the AMS recognises the history of mathematics as an integral part of mathematical activity. I firmly believe that history provides countless examples of how fruitful it is for mathematicians to cultivate the history and the philosophy of mathematics. In our current times, I believe that this is truer than ever".
