Introduction to Mathematical Analysis wins 'Outstanding Course' Award

Students described Jonathan Hickman's Introduction to Mathematical Analysis course as 'outstanding' and 'highly engaging'.

Jonathan Hickman's Introduction to Mathematical Analysis takes home the 'Outstanding Course' Award for the College of Science and Engineering at the 2026 Edinburgh University Students' Association Teaching Awards.

This year's awards received over 2,000 nominations from students, celebrating the best of teaching and support at the University. In their nominations, students said Jonathan's enthusiasm and use of interactive teaching methods create a stimulating environment that encourages curiosity, discussion, and genuine enjoyment of learning.

Jonathan received his award at the Teaching Awards ceremony in Teviot on April 22, and highlighted the important role played by George Kinnear and Linhan Li as part of the design and delivery team for Introduction to Mathematical Analysis.

Jonathan says, “I would also like to credit my colleagues who worked on the semester 1 course, Introduction to Mathematics at University, and those that worked on the broader prehonours curriculum review (in particular, Steven O’Hagan, Chris Sangwin, Wei En Tan, Ben Goddard, Nikolaos Bournaveas and Tony Carbery).

IMU very much helped set things up for the analysis course and a lot of thought went into the overall design of the prehonours curriculum, of which Introduction to Mathematical Analysis is a part”.

Students said that Introduction to Mathematical Analysis provides carefully structured content that builds naturally from prior learning and develops into a clear, coherent narrative.

They also highlighted the clarity and quality of the teaching materials, which provide strong support for understanding complex ideas, alongside a well-organised approach that helps deepen engagement with the subject.

Bernd Schroers, Head of School, says, “Being crowned Outstanding Course in CSE is an amazing success for a new course, and is a great endorsement of Jonathan, George and Linhan’s design and delivery of Introduction to Mathematical Analysis. Congratulations to all involved”.
